10 Reasons Why You Should Be Proud of becoming a Nurse

Have you considered a career in nursing? It’s a very rewarding career, both monetarily and emotionally. Making a difference in people’s lives and bringing them hope and cheer is not something that you can achieve in just about any career. Read on to know why the nursing career is so rewarding.

1. There is great demand for nurses at present and this demand is projected to rise by 2020, by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in USA. The job opportunities in this career field will be astounding for the right candidates. So, becoming a nurse in Cameroon/Africa makes you a potential "Bush Fallers"

2. Nurses make excellent wages; an average registered nurse makes more than $52,000 a year and more experienced and specialized nurses make over $72,000.

3. A nurse can work in different kinds of establishments, each offering unique work environments. For example, a nurse can work in hospitals, schools, home care facilities, government agencies, and so on.

4. Nurses can work in flexible schedules, and take up shifts as desired. Shifts are between 4 to 12 hours a day, and a nurse can opt for the best shifts to accommodate other side jobs or education opportunities.

5. As a nurse, you’ll make a huge difference in people’s lives. A caring and compassionate nurse is considered as a guardian angel by patients. This can be a very satisfying and gratifying career for the compassionate.

6. As a nurse, you get the opportunity to interact with patients, medical staff, doctors and administrators every day. This gives you the opportunity to learn from other careers and add to your knowledge base, while sharpening your interpersonal skills.

7. You’ll never know what’s going to happen at any given point in time. there’s constant excitement and challenge in a nurse’s life. You have the opportunity to make swift decisions, learn each day and never get bored, as each day is different.

Now the three most Important REASONS

By choosing the profession of nursing, you are expressing your innermost desire of caring and love for your fellow members sharing this world with you. You are fulfilling your desire to make a positive contribution in your life by improving the life of other people living with you. As a nurse, your positive contribution towards improving the life of the other person comes when you extend assistance by helping the patients cure from the pain or suffering caused due to illness or disease.

The second reason why you choose nursing as a profession is that you want to prove to the world at large that you have the requisite capability or the skills this noble profession calls for. As a certified nursing assistant or a registered nurse, you have the confidence in you to create and build fruitful relationships with the people at large and the patients in particular. Using your interpersonal skills, you instill the confidence in the patients that they can overcome the ailment and return to normalcy.

The third important reason that will make you feel proud is that you took the nursing profession not just for earning money or just grow up the ladder in the healthcare industry through specialization. Earning money is only one small part in the profession. You want to display and get recognized for your dedication and service to the needy people. Not everybody can become a nurse and achieve great success in the profession. It should be inculcated in your blood to extend selfless contribution to the humanity in general and the patient in particular.

Thanks for reading. Hope you'll change your point of view on NURSES.

The University of Buea shall thus be mentoring and  supervising St Louis. Buea along with St Louis shall jointly issue the end of course certificates.

STRUCTURE OF ALL THE BACHELOR PROGRAMS

Each program is covered in two semesters (one year). The two semesters are on the school campus in Bamenda. Three months thereafter are devoted to field work in practical settings to sharpen functional skills in the different areas of competencies.

For more details on course programs and other related issues see the specific curriculum in detail by visiting our web page at www.saintlouisgroup.info.

All students must have good communication skills. If their language is poor, they will do well to register for private classes at the linguistic centre in Bamenda.
Eligibility for Bachelor Hospital Management Courses

Three groups of students are eligible for this course.

Group A  students:

Are those who have already studied and acquired at least a diploma in one of the health related disciplines including Medicine, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Pharmacy, Radiology and ultra sonography, Dental therapy etc. They must show that they had "A" Levels or BACC and studied for at least three years before getting the diploma. These would include HPD, Diplome D'Etat, SRN, DSEP in these fields. Equivalent certificates from other countries are also accepted.

Group B Students:

These are students who have a BSC in Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Zoology, Botany, Economics, Management, Geography, Mathematics, Anthropology, Sociology.

Graduates in History, Gender Studies, Political Sciences and others would not be appropriate except were they can show proof of "A" Level Sciences.

Group B students have to take extra courses in basic health science classes that are offered during the day in the first to third year classes of the HPD classes on campus. These include: all Public Health related courses, Psychology, Psychiatry, Sociology, Human Development, Bio-Statistics, Research Methodology. They have to validate these courses before they can sit for the B.Tech examinations.

Students shall do well to learn and acquire computer skills on their own. Computer illiteracy shall be frowned upon and these skills are necessary from day one.

GROUP C STUDENTS, DISTANT LEARNING VIA INTERNET.

These are candidates who wish to study and get a degree in Health Administration but cannot be physically present on the school campus in Bamenda every day. This facility is reserved for Medical doctors, Surveillants and surveillant generalist, majors, general supervisors and other service heads and health personnel that are currently working in Cameroon. Students will have to travel to Bamenda on predetermined dates and intervals for interaction with staff and other students.

Other persons out of Cameroon have expressed their wish to participate but it is rather tricky and their case would be looked into later. They have the difficulty of being physically present in Bamenda at some point in time. We are still laying out a foundation on how to handle, follow up and manage this very important group C students. It is certain that their course work has to be spread over two years.

Nurses' Do's and Don’ts

The Dos:

  1. When doing documentation, it is important to write legibly. The information you are writing isn’t only for your personal reference. It is for other nurse’s/doctor’s use as well because it is a hospital record. Make it a habit to write in a way that others may understand your handwriting.
  2. Charting is one of the most important tasks a nurse does in a day. It is highly advisable to do it with great precision. There are times it can get repetitive but if you know the hospital’s software pretty well, do it as fast and accurate as you could. This saves you from getting bored. You can still finish more tasks which you are more interested at.
  3. Although there are times it is difficult to tell your patients their real situation, it is important that you’re honest with them. In cases you need to make another round of injection (which most patients are afraid of), tell them that it indeed hurt but you’ll do it as fast so they won’t feel the pain at all.
  4. It is important to be organized at all times. This enables you to have a clear mind, to think with more focus. A nurse should be able to put medicines, tools and equipments in their proper places. This will help your co-workers find things faster whenever needed.
  5. It is important to muster how certain procedures are done such as performing physical examinations, interpreting X-ray results and other laboratory tests, and counseling patients on the things to do. People’s health/life is at stake therefore, a nurse should be very well aware of the right things to do.
  6. A nurse should be able to manage time properly. It is important to exercise being prompt all the time, especially when administering medications. There are certain medications which can achieve better results when medication is done at the required time.
  7. A nurse on duty must always exercise accuracy. He/She must be certain on details like who to provide medication to, what medication to give and when to give it. If required to make a solution on the said medication, he/she must also do it with great precision.

The Dont’s:

  1. When doing documentation, do not just erase any information with any kind of eraser. You must utilize the hospital’s subscribed way or erasing or deleting details.
  2. Do not forge someone else’s signature. It may cause you your job or your co-worker’s if proven. Even when you think that there is really no harm on putting a forged initial, you will never know what sort of emergency will happen soon.
  3. When doing physical examination/ tests, don’t use inappropriate description such as “button-like scar”. Instead, use an appropriate description of its measurements such as its actual measurement in centimeter or milliliter.
  4. Do not bad mouth co-workers to patients. It gives a negative image to the hospital where you are working at.

These are just few of the many things which nurses are supposed to do and avoid. When you had yourself familiar on the dos and don’ts of the hospital, you are making yourself more equipped and more knowledgeable altogether.

How To Prepare For an Internship

Securing an internship should be treated in the same way as obtaining a full-time job. Internships can be competitive and the recruitment process should be taken seriously. Finding the internship that’s right for you requires patience, research and a plan of action. You need to prove your suitability to the hiring committee in terms of your personality, preparedness and maturity in handling new and challenging experiences in any environment. Participation in student life would be a useful experience to highlight on your internship application, as would past summer jobs or volunteer and community experience. In addition, it is necessary to assess your skills, interests and values so that your direction is clear. Furthermore, prepare a proper resume and cover letter. Finally, use the internship analysis guide to help you put your internship search strategy into action.

A guide to helping you plan your internship

The most important thing in the initial phase of planning your internship involves setting your learning objectives / career goals and putting together a job search plan that will lead you in a positive direction and towards an internship opportunity that will best suit your needs. Listed below are a few questions you should ask yourself before you even begin your internship search.

Develop an Internship Target

  • What are your career goals?
  • What skills do you need to strengthen in order for you to reach these goals?
  • How will your targeted internship help you to strengthen your skills?
  • What transferable skills do you have?
  • What would you describe as the ideal internship for you?

Prepare for your Internship Search

  • Register to use the CAPS Web site so you can browse the internship postings or search through directories of internships
  • Contact companies directly and ask if there are internships available
  • Network with people you know and make them aware of your goals (teachers, friends, family members, etc.)
  • Check government Web sites
  • Visit and register with Placement Étudiant
  • Check out internship resources at the Career Resource Center (H-440)
  • Get suggestions from the Outreach / Placement Officer at CAPS

Build your career portfolio

  • Take advantage of workshops related to job search techniques and strategies
  • Make an appointment to see one of our Placement Officers to get feedback on your CV and cover letter.
  • Contact references and make a list available to employers upon request
  • If your field of study requires you to have a portfolio, have it organized and available for viewing.

Set your priorities

  • Make a prioritized list of desired internships
  • Research the possibilities to the fullest extent
  • Determine the best way to apply for the internship position
  • Inquire if you are uncertain about requirements, eligibility or qualifications
  • Find out the contact person
  • Follow up on favorable responses

Skills Assessment

Choosing an internship that best matches your needs and your chosen career path is not always easy and straightforward. Assessing which area your skills are the strongest in can help guide you. Moreover, assessing your skills can broaden your options and show you domains you might not have thought of otherwise.
A thorough self-assessment is a necessary step in internship planning. The information you can gain from through self-assessment is beneficial and crucial to the development of your cover letters, resume and interview preparation.
Working through the self-assessment checklist will help you identify your transferable skills. Even though you lack direct work experience, you have acquired skills that you can bring to the work place; skills that you have gained through other work, school, volunteer and / or extra-curricular experience.
Self-assessment requires you to take an in-depth look at a variety of skill areas. Even though you may think some of the areas do not apply, or do not seem important, you may be surprised to find out that most employers look for well-rounded candidates to fill internship positions.
After completing your self-assessment, you could prepare further by preparing a personal statement, which represents a summary of skills and personal attributes that highlight what you can offer to a company. Your statement will help you compose cover letters, highlight your resume and assist you in the interview process. Ask yourself the following questions to help you get started:
  • Why should I hire you?
  • Tell me about yourself?
  • What can you offer the company?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Your personal statement will help you to write a clear and concise cover letter and it will help you answer questions with confidence and ease during an interview. Remember that employers want you to provide examples to support your answers in order to assess your personal attributes and / or experience.

ST LOUIS UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF HEALTH AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES

Bamenda, Cameroon

Formerly called the St Louis Higher Institute of Health, we changed our name and status to the
University Institute as we brace up to start professional bachelor programmes under the strict
supervision and guidance of the University of Buea come October 2011.
We are strictly into the health business sector.
It is what we know best and master to our finger tips. That is why we are the best and most
elaborate school for the training of paramedical staff in Cameroon. We are the reference not by
accident but by design. It has taken us time, planning, demonstration, evaluation, ingenuity and
sacrifice to be the number one in Cameroon. We follow the rules and we listen to advice and
positive criticism from our mentors. H.E. Cardinal Tumi taught our students that to succeed, we
need to work hard, like work that is well done, have self-discipline, have intellectual honesty,
respect nature and PRAY. We are specific and direct in our action. All our objectives are
measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound. We put the success and interest of the youth and
our nation first on our agenda. We know our strength and opportunities. We grow them. We
know our weaknesses and we do our best to correct them.

What makes us tick is the difference we manifest daily.
We operate on Kingdom Principles. We know the nature of God. We are in his nature and we
work with the understanding of that nature. We operate from that platform. God is LOVE, LIFE,
TRUTH, SPIRIT, SOUL, INTELLIGENCE and PRINCIPLE. To beat us at our game, you must
work in this light and understanding. Short of this we remain the head and never the tail.

Our students know the value of character and good attitude.
They understand what customer service is all about. Integrity, honesty and self-discipline are
issues they appreciate and hold closest to their hearts. They dream it, live it and work it daily. It
becomes second nature to anything and anybody related in one way or another with St Louis. It is
the spirit of change starting with the mindsets. That is why St Louis is here to change our nation
positively because our students who are infiltrating the Cameroonian health sector like ants are
taking a different attitude to Cameroon and other nations. Excellence and rectitude is our trade
mark. Watch us, stay with us, join us, support us, bless us. Say something nice about us to
anybody, anywhere and anytime. If it is negative, tell us first so that we can have a chance to
change where necessary and possible. We love you.

THIS IS WHAT WE DO AND WHO WE ARE:

This academic year, there are 880 students enrolled for 2010/2011 divided in six departments
namely: Pharmacy Technology, Nursing, Medical Lab Sciences, Dental Therapy, Physiotherapy,
and Radiology-Ultrasonography. Students come in with A Levels or BACC and do not have to
write any competitive examination (etude de dossiers) and train for three years to obtain the
HPD/DSEP. Higher Professional Diploma issued by the Ministry of Higher Education. A subset
of students that are sent to us by the Ministry of Public Health for training are selected by
‘concour’ organized by that ministry. They also obtain a second diploma issued by the Ministry
of Public Health.

PROFESSIONAL BACHELOR PROGRAMMES AS FROM OCTOBER 2011

We are starting professional Bachelor programmes in six areas. Training will last one year and
three months. Students study at St Louis for one year and sit for their examinations organised and
supervised by the University of Buea. In the second phase, they go out for three months of
intensive practical training in different hospital settings in our nation and beyond. They are given
an attestation to cover this practical period. They then are ready to conquer the world because
they have the tools and ability to deliver on their promises. They would be practical and
productive, using their heads and hands and not tell you stories. That is their legacy.

The fields of training include: B.Tech. Physiotherapy, B.Tech. Medical Lab Sciences, B.Tech.
Hospital Management, B.Tech. Community Dentistry.

Also envisaged to start at the same time as we continue our negotiations with the University of
Buea would be Bachelor in Nursing, B. Tech. Radiology-Ultrasonography.

ADMISSION CRITERIA INTO PROFESSIONAL DEGREE PROGRAMMES:

Students most have successfully completed a minimum of three years study in the appropriate
field they wish to get into in a recognised higher institute or university setting to be admitted.
The Hospital Management course is open to all forms of university degrees and professional
training backgrounds. It gives students prowling our streets the opportunity to convert to
professionals in one year three months of intense training at St Louis. This is the opportunity you
have been waiting for. At St Louis, we help you to be part of the 25,000 job opportunities that
government has put at the disposal of youths. You cannot be part of it if you are not a
professional. The writing is on the wall and those who can read it, make hay while the sun shines.
Fees for degree programmes are 500,000frs (€760/$1075). 50,000 frs is paid separately as
practical levies for three months which are forwarded to partnering hospitals. Fees for HPD
programmes are 350.000frs per year. There are some extras for different expenditures

Physio Seminar

St Louis students
The Cameroon society of Physiotherapists had a seminar on Saturday 30th April 2011 at the General hospital of Bamenda. this seminar was on the topic CARPAL TUNNEL syndrome, a disease affecting the medial nerve.
And  guess what, St Louis Students were there!!!!! Yes they were there, and with their presence, they proved that St Louis is a school to "talk about".
In this seminar, there were people like the President of the Cameroon society of Physiotherapists and his staff, and physiotherapists from the national triangle.
family picture
Some students also came from UDM in the West Region and we had some ideas to exchange among us. Although the seminar was Mainly in english, the St Louis students who are from a francophone bacground had no difficulties with it, unlike the other colleagues from UDM who were purely french speaking. This is one of the best thing in St Louis, where students become Bilingual when they have finished their training.
